Rahul gives new twist to ‘chowkidar’ jibe at Modi

Last Updated 07 May 2019, 15:28 IST

Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of ignoring interests of the common people, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said Modi was a chowkidar (watchman) of Anil Ambani, Mehul Choksi and Vijay Mallya.

“For the last five years, Modiji has been claiming to be a chowkidar. But whose chowkidar? He is the chowkidar only of Anil Ambani, Mehul Choksi and Vijay Mallya,” said Gandhi. He was addressing a rally in West Bengal’s Purulia district.

The Congress president also slammed the Prime Minister for his earlier poll promise of bringing back money stashed abroad and depositing Rs 15 lakh in the bank account of everyone in the country.

“What happened to the promise of Rs 15 lakh? Has anyone got that amount? Instead, Modiji put Rs 30,000 crore into Anil Ambani’s account,” said Gandhi.

No jail for farmers

He also said that defaulters like Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya have escaped from the country but farmers are getting arrested for being unable to repay loans.

“If we come to power we will amend the law to ensure that farmers will not have to go to jail for being unable to repay loans,” said Gandhi.

However, he did not say anything critical of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
