Former Union minister and Congress candidate from Anandpur Sahib parliamentary seat, Manish Tewari said that his party’s government at the centre will set up a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe the demonetisation ‘scam’ in the country.

Tiwari on Thursday had claimed the scam ran into hundreds of crores of rupees.

“Demonetisation was not only a huge financial scam; it was like the brutal murder of the economy and responsibility needs to be fixed for it. Those guilty need to be brought to book,” he said.

Tewari had declined to contest the 2014 general elections citing ill-health. This time, he is pitted against BJP's alliance partner, the Akali Dal’s Prem Singh Chandumajra and AAP's NS Shergill.

Chandumajra is the sitting MLA from this seat.

Tiwari said that the demonetisation decision, which was arbitrary and dictatorial, had affected people in every section of society, whether it was a daily wage labourer, a middle-class working family or a small or medium entrepreneur.

“We will probe the motives behind demonetisation”, he said.
