Last Updated 13 October 2018, 10:37 IST

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) distributed energy-efficient LED bulbs to beneficiaries of neighbouring villages at a programme held in Zilla Panchayat Auditorium.

On the occasion, Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr M R Ravi complimented the MRPL and said its CSR activities like construction of anganwadis, toilets, biogas plants, LED bulb distribution etc, are complementing other government welfare activities.

Zilla Panchayat President Meenakshi Shantigodu appreciated the CSR activities undertaken by the MRPL, including building toilet blocks in various schools.

MRPL GGM (Corporate Strategy) Sushil Chandra said that India’s energy needs are increasing. But non-renewable energy sources are depleting. Hence, there is a need to conserve energy through initiatives like the usage of LED bulbs and solar energy. The MRPL has already installed rooftop solar plants on its refinery premises and LED bulbs distribution is another step in that direction, he added.

CRS and ESC activities

As a part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment, the MRPL has been actively undertaking welfare projects in its neighbouring villages.

In addition to its existing CSR activities, the company has resolved to embark upon Enterprise Social Commitment (ESC), which focuses primarily on the projects leading to the betterment of the environment.

As a part of its ESC commitment, it is distributing LED bulbs to its nearby villages - Bala, Kalavar, Permude, Kuthethoor, Jokatte, Thokur, Soorinje, Delanthabettu, Chelairu and Madhya.

The company is distributing around 32,000 LED bulbs amounting to Rs 43 lakh to all the families residing in these ten villages. These bulbs consume less energy (14W) when compared to conventional tube lights or incandescent bulbs. Further, these LED bulbs are free from mercury making them environment-friendly.

The bulbs are being distributed by MRPL in association with respective Grama Panchayats to all the residences, anganwadis, Grama Panchayat office, schools, community halls, etc.
