Depressed over his brinjal crop being damaged due to cold wave, a 48-year-old farmer committed suicide by hanging himself at his agriculture farm in Rajsamand district of Rajasthan on Sunday.

The farmer identified as Lehrulal was found hanging in his farm.

His wife and neighbours spotted him and rushed him to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

The police is investigating the case.

The incident took place in Pipali Acharyan village the district. According to sources, Lehrulal was upset over his brinjal crop, sprawled over land measuring about four bighas, being damaged.

According to his wife Gauri Devi, he went to his agriculture farm on Sunday morning and found that most of the crop had been damaged by the cold wave.

"The condition of crop forced him to take the extreme step and he tied a rope from a tree, in the middle of his agriculture farm, and hanged himself".

This incident comes exactly a week after Rajasthan government announced a farm loan waiver up to Rs 2 lakh.

The Rajasthan farm loan waiver is expected to add an additional burden of Rs 18,000 crore on the state exchequer.

The agrarian crisis or farmer distress in the state is one of the issues that the Congress party had promised to tackle during its campaigning in the run up to the Assembly elections held this month.
