A 25-year-old Delhi police constable was gunned down by unidentified assailants in broad daylight today near Mehrana village in Jhajjar district.

The deceased has been identified as Vijay, a resident of the district's Sivana village, police said.

Old enmity is believed to be the cause behind the killing and Jhajjar police have registered a case of murder against some villagers on the basis of a complaint by the deceased's uncle, Satyaveer Singh.

The incident took place when Vijay and his uncle were on their way to Najafgarh in Delhi.

"As they crossed a railway crossing outside Mehrana village, a car coming from the opposite direction intercepted them.

Some armed youths got down from the car and opened several round of fires at Vijay from close range. Vijay died on the spot while the killers sped away," they said, adding that Satyaveer was not injured in the incident.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem.

"We are probing the case from various angles. Statements of Satyaveer and other kin of the deceased are being recorded to find out the exact reason behind the crime," they added.

Three teams of investigators have been formed to look into the case while information about the car used in the crime has been circulated among police stations in nearby districts.
