The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on each of the 3500 teachers who failed to turn up for evaluation of the Class X and Class XII board examination students' answer sheets.

The fine imposed by the board will have to be paid by the respective school managements if they fail to justify the reasons for the lapse.

The board has issued show cause notices to all such schools which "failed to ensure" that their teachers nominated for evaluation of the students' answer sheets participate in the exercise.

The CBSE, which claimed to have successfully concluded the board examinations on Thursday, has also recommended for initiating disciplinary action against 200 teachers of the Delhi government schools for their failure to join the evaluation process, said CBSE secretary Anurag Tripathi.

The board is hoping to announce the board examination results for both class X and XII "in third week of May."

More than 2 lakh teachers were nominated by their respective schools to participate in the evaluation exercise. Over 31 lakh students of class X and class XII took the board examinations this year.

The purpose of imposing fine is not to punish “any individual” but to enforce the board's rules and guidelines, Tripathi said.

“After our notices and imposition of fine, attendance of the evaluators went cent per cent. We have gone tough this time to arrest the trend of teachers not turning up for evaluation of answer sheets so far. Such laxity does not only put additional burden on those joining the process but also affects the quality of the evaluation,” he added.

Evaluation of the students answer sheets are on at about 2200 centres across the country with the Board tagetting to complete the exercise by April 15.

“On an average, 7.5 lakh copies are being evaluated everyday. We are hoping to complete the exercise by April 15,” CBSE secretary said.
