Spate of crimes against women and periodic bouts of violent quota agitations have had a damning impact on the number of women choosing IIM-Rohtak. Incidents of rape and murder, like the recent one in Rohtak where a 23-year-old woman was raped and mutilated, continue to bring disrepute to this part of Jatland with women shying away from enrolling at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM).

Once on a par
A couple of years ago, this IIM flaunted its overwhelming number of women students, which was on a par with men. Last year, when the Jat agitation was at its peak with Rohtak as its epicenter and protesters running amok indulging in unbridled arson, loot and even rape on highways, there were only nine women who preferred IIM-Rohtak against 145 men.

In 2015, there were just 14 women against 150 men. This comes in complete contrast to 2013 when the ratio of women and men was almost equal. Parents, sources said, have been reluctant to enrol their daughters at the institute. Not far away from the national capital, IIM-Rohtak was once a preferred choice. But the preferences have altered in the last few years as there has been a rise in crimes against women.

Campaign
The government and the IIM management are planning a campaign on the railways website in an attempt to spread the message that the government is committed to ensure women’s safety. More than the number of incidents, it’s the brutality of the crime that has shocked people. Memories of a 28-year-old Nepalese woman who was gang-raped before being brutally killed in Rohtak are still fresh.
