Journalists demand strict against BJP J&K MLA

Last Updated 21 September 2018, 11:44 IST

The Press Association and other journalists organisations on Sunday demanded “a strict action” against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Chaudhary Lal Singh over his threatening remarks directed at the journalists working in Jammu and Kashmir.

Singh, a member of the J&K Assembly and a former minister, asked journalists at a press conference in Jammu on Friday to "draw a line" warning them of consequences if they do not do so. He also warned the scribes of a fate similar to that of Shujaat Bukhari, the editor of Rising Kashmir who was shot dead recently.

“We demand that strict action be taken against the lawmaker for making threatening remarks hinting possible violence at journalists in the valley,” journalists bodies sought in a joint statement.

They termed the BJP legislator's remarks as “nothing short of criminal intimidation,” calling it “a direct attack” on the freedom of the press.

“They also serve to vitiate the atmosphere and endanger the lives of journalists who work and live precariously in areas under conflict,” the journalists bodies added.
