The Left and other fringe players in Delhi may be hailing the AAP’s spectacular showing, but the landslide for Arvind Kejriwal has also forced some of them to lose their national status.

The Election Commission has sent notices to the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) asking them why their status as national parties should not be withdrawn.

An outfit qualifies as a national party if it wins two per cent of seats (11 seats) in Lok Sabha from at least three states.  It could also be recognised a national party if it polls six per cent of the total valid votes in Lok Sabha and Assembly polls in at least four states besides winning four LS seats.

As it has been getting votes in the national capital, the BJP had put up candidates in all the seats, but it performed poorly except for a couple of constituencies.

Irrespective of the wipe out, most of the anti-BJP parties like the JD(U) and the Left have hailed the AAP’s record victory.

“The CPI congratulates the leadership of the AAP and Arvind Kejriwal for their landslide victory in Delhi Assembly polls,” the party said in a statement.  “The CPI also salutes the voters of Delhi for rejecting the communal and anti-people economic policies of the Modi government.  The people of Delhi by their massive mandate have registered their rejection of the BJP arrogance and double speak,” it added.

Noting that the AAP had won an “unprecedented” and “resounding” victory in Delhi, the CPM congratulated Delhi voters for rejecting the BJP decisively. “This massive mandate should enable the new government to adopt and implement policies in favour of the aam aadmi,” it said.

The JD(U) believes that Delhi results will have far reaching impact in Bihar that goes for polls later this year.

“It has proved that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogans have not remained effective. The people will vote on positive agenda. They have rejected divisive politics,” said JD-U general secretary Arun Shrivastav.
