Pay hike for IIT, IIM faculty likely

Last Updated 24 June 2009, 19:50 IST

The pay review committee headed by Goverdhan Mehta, set up for the faculty members of the central technical institution like Indian Institute of Technology and IIMs, submitted its report to the HRD Ministry in February this year.

The government then constituted another committee to study the recommendations and make final suggestions on the salaries and perks for the teachers of 53 Central institutions, including IITs and IIMs.

Faced with the challenge of retaining talented faculty, the committee had suggested a better package for these teachers as against the faculty members of universities and colleges. However, the committee headed by former director of Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore, is unlikely to recommend any change in the four-tier structure in the faculty in the IITs.

Besides meeting all stakeholders and considering the reports of the 6th pay panel and the Chadha committee on university and college teachers, the panel got a memorandum on the pay review from academicians and policy makers. It also suggested revised pay for physical education teachers and library staff in these institutions.
