JOIN USThe recurring attacks on Christian institutions in Delhi prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to summon Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi and speak to Union Home Secretary L C Goyal to take all measures needed to ensure strict action against culprits.
The flurry of activities came following unidentified men breaking into Holy Child Auxilium School in south Delhi's Vasant Vihar in the early hours of Friday and damaging property before making away with a few thousand rupees.
This was the sixth incident involving Christian institutions.
The prime minister told Bassi to "speedily investigate the recent incidents of vandalism" and ensure that the guilty are brought to book. Over telephone, he asked Goyal to "pay special attention to the rising incidents of crime, and vandalism", and to work towards ensuring the safety and security of women in the capital.
Taking a cue from the prime minister's expression of "deep concern and anguish" over the attack on the convent school, the Union Home Ministry decided to study whether there is a pattern in the incidents.
‘Attacks not linked’
Top Home Ministry sources said Goyal may soon summon Bassi to find out whether there is a "pattern or design" in these attacks as alleged by Christian groups. Delhi Police has been maintaining that these attacks were not linked.
However, the ministry seems unconvinced and said it will have to study the situation. "It (series of attacks) is a matter of worry. A perception has been created that it is a matter of design. We do not know who is behind the incidents but we have to analyse if there is any pattern in the series of incidents in recent past," the official said.
After his meeting with the prime minister, Bassi told reporters that Modi has given strict instructions to track down culprits in the convent school incident.
He added that of the six incidents, arrests have been made in some cases and highlighted that there were no connection between them.
