SC upholds conviction of Kerala leader

Last Updated 30 January 2015, 19:26 IST

The Supreme Court on Friday upheld the conviction of CPM leader M V Jayarajan for contempt of court for using unparliamentary language against judges.

The apex court, in the process, reminded him of Lord Denning's words that those who criticise a judgment must remember that from the nature of the Judge’s office, he cannot reply to their criticism.

A bench of Justices Vikramjit Sen and C Nagappan held the former MLA from Kerala guilty as per the Contempt of Courts Act, as had the Kerala High Court in November 2011.

However, the apex court reduced his six-month jail term to four weeks' simple imprisonment. The CPM leader has already served one week in prison before obtaining bail.
