Prominent Ayodhya-based Hindu seer Mahant Paramhans Das was arrested on Tuesday.

Earlier, Paramhans had threatened to immolate himself on the 26th anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid on Thursday, if the Centre failed to make a law for the construction of the Ram temple.

''The seer has been arrested in connection with a case lodged against him for threatening to commit suicide,'' a senior police official said in Ayodhya.

The police said that the Mahant had been sent to jail after being remanded to a 14-day judicial custody by a district court.

''I will immolate myself on the forthcoming Babri demolition anniversary on December 6, 2018, if the government failed to make law for the temple's construction before that time,'' Paramhans had said.

He had also recently embarked on an indefinite fast to press for his demand but was forcibly admitted to the hospital by the police and fed.
