Bypoll to Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat will be held along with the elections to the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Thursday.
“It will be held along with the assembly elections,” Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora told reporters here at a press conference. Bypoll to Kanyakumari has been necessitated after the death of its representative H Vasanthakumar due to Covid-19 infection in August 2020.
Kumar, a Congressman, won the seat in 2019 elections by a margin of over 2 lakh votes, defeating the lone Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan elected from Tamil Nadu. It is expected that Congress and BJP, which contested the seat in 2019, are likely to field their candidates as part of the DMK and AIADMK alliance respectively.
