Muslim Youth League, the youth wing of the Indian Union Muslim League, found itself in the middle of a controversy on Monday after it was accused of swindling funds raised to support victims and families of the Unnao and Kathua rape cases.

A dissident faction within the party publically accused it of swindling Rs 1 crore, a claim also being backed by a Kerala minister.

Youth League National Council member Yusuf Padanilam alleged that the party leaders, including State General Secretary P K Firoz, misused the funds for personal purposes.

Kerala Higher Education Minister K T Jaleel, a former IUML activist, said that the Youth League leadership must explain how the funds were spent as massive fund collection was carried out in the name of the two cases.

Even as the Youth League was trying to put up a defense by maintaining that funds were given to lawyers and the families of the victims, the rival factions were trying to counter its claim by seeking back account statements.

Sources said that the government is likely to order a probe into the allegations.
