Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday was granted regular bail by a Delhi court in the case relating to the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar on January 17, 2014, in a hotel here.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal asked Tharoor to furnish a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and one surety of the like amount for granting him permanent relief of bail.

On Thursday, the MP was given an anticipatory bail by a special judge.

The court accepted the bail bonds furnished by the accused leader, personally present before it.

The judge also noted that Tharoor has been provided with a copy of the chargesheet and other related documents filed by the Delhi Police.

During the proceedings, the Delhi Police filed a reply to a plea moved by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy to assist the prosecutor, saying his application was not maintainable.

The Delhi police's Special Investigation Team also said since the case is to be sent to the sessions court for trial, the present court should dismiss Swamy's application.

Senior advocate Vikas Pahwa, representing Tharoor, opposed Swamy's plea, contending he had no locus in the case. He, however, sought time to file a written reply.

The court asked Swamy to provide a copy of his application to Tharoor's counsel.

The court put the matter for scrutiny of documents and consideration of Swamy's application on July 26.

Tharoor has secured anticipatory bail on summons issued against him by the court, after having taken cognisance of a charge sheet filed by the Delhi police for the offence of abetment to suicide.
