Heatwave conditions observed in Mumbai, Konkan cities

With the scorching sun and soaring Mercury, the financial capital of Mumbai and the coastal Konkan belt of Maharashtra are facing heatwave conditions.

The heatwave started on Thursday and is expected to remain till Saturday, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre of the IMD.

“Heatwave conditions likely in Konkan including Mumbai coming three days up to 27 March,” said Dr KS Hosalikar, Head SID, Climate Research & Services, Pune.

Isolated pockets of the twin districts of Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban and the neighbouring Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts in North Konkan and Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg in South Konkan all are recording high temperatures.

In Mumbai, the Colaba observatory recorded a maximum 35.4 degrees Celsius while Santacruz recorded around 39 degrees Celsius.

Palghar crossed 41 degrees Celsius in the afternoon. “A very hot and dry day again…he situation is likely to continue for the next 2 to three days,” said Hosalikar.

“Dapoli station in Ratnagiri in South Konkan recorded 38 plus in the afternoon, with humidity around 40 per cent. Heatwave conditions releasing in both North as well as South Konkan as forecasted,” he said.

Meanwhile, Shreekant Naik, a resident of Vasai, said: “I am feeling the heat…it is unbearable. It is just the end of March and the temperatures are soaring.”
