Many of us, many times in life, would have experienced this rather interesting phenomenon, wherein we’d be physically present at a place, but mentally not - particularly the times we’d be preoccupied by some persecuting thoughts.

.
At such times, we’d find ourselves unwittingly flapping our legs, fiddling with our finger-ring, riffling through some papers, twiddling with our tresses, jangling our office keys, or indulging in any such asinine activities. All these are indeed a clear manifestation of the untrammeled mind, meandering in myriad directions.

To be mentally absent, by letting the mind go berserk, is quite normal during the times when we aren’t doing anything significant. But, there are some moments, wherein being mentally absent can spark irrevocable damages. For instance, say, you are at an important business meet, aiming at clinching a lucrative deal. At this juncture, if your mind is recklessly rambling, it can cause your ratiocination to go awry, thus making you screw up the whole meet.

It could be even an official meet, a social meet or a spiritual meet, too. During these times, in case we are unable to lasso our mind, chances are that we may miss out on many valuable information.

This state of being mentally absent, affects interpersonal relations, too. Recently, a friend was mentioning of her quite amicable neighbour, who had called on her to share some personal matter. But unfortunately, on that day, my friend herself was scourged by a salvo of problems. Apparently, she was mentally absent and hardly hanging on to her neighbour’s whimpers. Her seemingly glassy look and clinical attitude, it seems, riled her neighbour greatly, precipitating in a rift in their relation.

Incidentally, when not mentally present, we inadvertently tend to spew out barbed words too that can bring in bitter estrangement in relations. And at times, by being mentally absent, we even drop clangers, commit embarrassing gaffes and goof-ups. Sometimes we behold people going ballistic, bristling with rage, after having misconstrued some conversation, by being mentally absent.

These apart, when mentally not present, we often lose out on life’s teeny little joys too. Like say, we are amidst the grandeur and opulence of a ritzy hotel. We see spreads of scrumptious delights. We are unable to savour these, as mind is somewhere. Ditto when we embark on a pleasure jaunt to an exotic place. If our mind is galloping towards, say, some gruelling workload at office, naturally it thwarts the fun, by shielding those moments of joie de vivre.

So, we should note that the good moments that we lose are irretrievable, just as damages caused by being mentally absent are irrevocable!
