Polling to 3 town panchayats in Kodagu today

The district administration has initiated all measures to conduct elections to three urban local bodies in the district on Sunday.

The polling for the Somwarpet, Kushalnagar and Virajpet Town Panchayats will be held from 7 am to 5 pm.

There are 11 polling booths in Somwarpet, 16 in Kushalnagar and 18 in Virajpet. All the polling staff left for the their respective polling booths on Saturday afternoon.

A total of 64 candidates – 16 each from the Congress, the BJP and the JD(S), 2 SDPI and 14 Independent candidates – are contesting the election in Kushalnagar. The Congress and the JD(S) are contesting the election separately in the Town Panchayat.

In Somwarpet, 26 candidates are trying their luck. As the Congress and the JD(S) have entered into an alliance, the Congress has fielded 6 candidates, while the JD(S) has 5 candidates. The BJP is contesting from all the 11 wards, while there are four Independent candidates fighting it out in Somwarpet.

In Virajpet, 53 candidates are contesting the election. The Congress has fielded 14 candidates, the JD(S) has 4, BJP 18, NCP 1, SDPI 1 and Independent candidates 14.

There are 30,786 voters in the three ULBs. Somwarpet has 5,261 voters, Kushalnagar 11,599 and Virajpet has 13,923.

The police have strengthened security ahead of the election. Of the 45 polling booths, 10 have been declared sensitive, 7 hypersensitive, and 28 general polling booths.

EVMs are used in the election and the voters have NOTA facility.

The Election Commission has said that those who are unable to produce their Electors Photo Identity Card, can produce any of the 22 documents to cast their votes. The documents include passport, driving license, PAN card, service identity cards with photograph given to employees by Central or state government public sector undertakings or public limited companies, and passbooks with photograph given by banks or post office.

Prohibitory order

Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer P I Sreevidya has clamped a prohibitory order applicable up to 200-metre radius of polling booths in the Virajpet, Kushalnagar and Somwarpet Town Panchayats.

The use of loud speakers, parking of private vehicles and wooing the voters and engaging in campaign near the polling booths have been banned.
