Actors bring in the glamour element to the Lok Sabha

Last Updated 31 May 2019, 08:41 IST

Bengali actors Nusrat Jahan and Mimi Chakraborty, newly elected MPs from the Trinamool Congress, had to bear the brunt of social media on their first visit to the Parliament for their choice of clothing. Some supported them for breaking the pre-conceived notion on how parliamentarians should present themselves.

Many from the showbiz industry turned to politics this general election season and won people’s verdict with their charisma.

DH lists celebrities who won seats in the Lok Sabha polls 2019:

Sumalatha Ambareesh
The independent candidate defeated Nikhil Kumaraswamy, the son of Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, in the Mandya constituency in the high-voltage battle. Wife of three-time Congress MP and film star Ambareesh, Sumalatha was backed by big names of Sandalwood.

Sunny Deol
Deol, who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fairly late, contested and won against former Congress leader Balram Jakhar’s son Sunil Jakhar by a decent margin. The actor-producer-director was presented with a hand pump, reminiscent from the movie Gadar, in Gurdaspur while he filed his nomination.

Hans Raj Hans
Punjabi singer and BJP candidate Hans had a clean sweep in North West Delhi against Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Gugan Singh. With a musical career in which he sang folk songs, Sufi and Bollywood, Hans had been campaigning for political parties using his music as a crowd puller, years before he joined politics.

Hema Malini
The actor-turned-politician and BJP candidate won the Mathura Lok Sabha seat by a thumping margin against Narendra Singh of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and local industrialist Mahesh Pathak of Congress from Mathura. This is the second time the Dream Girl retained her sway in the Hindi heartland.

Kirron Kher
BJP's Kirron Kher won from Chandigarh leaving behind Pawan Kumar Bansal of the Congress and AAP’s Harmohan Dhawan. Kher fought the 'outsider' tag to score a huge win in Chandigarh in her debut five years ago. While an MP, Kher has been a judge on the TV show India’s Got Talent.
