IPL 2021 Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals highlights: RR choke in chase as CSK win by 45 runs

Match Synopsis: There was a contribution from most of the CSK batsmen as the men in Yellow posted 188/9 in 20 overs. Rajasthan Royal's new-comer Chetan Shakariya yet again was amongst wickets as he finished with the figures of 3/36. His scalps included Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, and CSK skipper MS Dhoni. Rajasthan Royals chocked in the chase as CSK all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran and Moeen Ali were amongst wickets. Ali picked 3 wickets, while Jadeja and Curran picked 2 wickets each to stop RR to just 143/9 in 20 overs, thus winning the match by 45 runs. Ali was the Player of the Match for his 3 wickets and 26 runs.

With two wins from the last two matches, CSK have moves to second on the points table behind RCB who are unbeaten so far this year. Problems for RR as they are now sixth with just one win from three matches.

CSK's Moeen Ali is the Player of the Match for hitting 26 runs from 20 balls and picking 3 wickets.

Moeen Ali:My job here is to try and score as many runs for the team and get a good start. When I went up the order, it wasn't an easy wicket and I'm pleased with both the departments. I thought as a team we played really well and everyone contributed. Once the left-handers came in I knew I had a good chance of bowling whenever the captain needs me. I feel it's a good wicket for the spinners and if you land the ball in the right areas you've always got a chance.

MS Dhoni, CSK captain:I always look at what's the best at that point of time. I felt Sam bowled really well and Deepak I think he tried the knuckleball too much and felt that a good start with the ballwas important. It was spinning a bit, I don't really mind Jos playing the reverse where it's turning a bit. It's important to have that sixth bowler, it always helps and it was stopping a bit for spinners. There was slightly less dew than usual. I felt we should have scored more and try to get as many as possible. A lot has changed over the years and right from the start we kept a very good atmosphere and a lot of the bowlers have been under the pump last year but this time they are enjoying bowling on these wickets. When you're playing you don't want anyone to say he's unfit.

Sanju Samson,RR captain: I thought it was a good score to chase down but we lost too many wickets in the middle overs. Our bowlers bowled really well, they batted too deep. 10-15 runs extra we gave down the line. We never expected that pitch to turn, the dew didn't come and the ball was still turning, so it was a bit shocking to see. It's very important to maintain a good composure, this format demands us to score at a higher risk rate; hence, it's very normal to get out often. I keep working on the basics and giving myself some time at the center. Chetan Sakariyabeen doing really well, we lost the match but there are a lot of positives.

His prey were Faf du Plessis, Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo. With Ben Stokes out, Morris will have to bear the burden of being the team’s key all-rounder.

Moeen Ali: Moeen Ali is enjoying his time with CSK. He is getting regular starts and is being asked to both bat and bowl. The Englishman played a vital knock of 46 in a tricky chase against PBKS. So far Ali has had limited opportunities in the leaguebut in those few chances, the all-rounder has managed a strike rate of 156.40, which is the sixth best for a list of players with the highest recorded strike rate in the league. Ali should relish batting on a fast bouncy track at Wankhede.

Jason Behrendorf, who was announced as a replacement for Josh Hazlewood in the CSK squad has left for India. RR Threats

Sanju Samson faded away quickly after kickstarting his IPL season on a high. Last season, Samson hit two fifties in RR’s first two matches of the tournament. After those two knocks, his next three scores read 8, 4 and 0. This phenomenon seems to have made a come-back now. After a thrilling hundred on his captaincy debut, against Punjab Kings, Samson was out on just 4. His inconsistency overshadows all his shot-making and aggressive intent. If he continues to remain inconsistent then then he would start feeling the burden of captaincy too.

RR Opportunity

It was predicted that David Miller could get a chance in the playing XI, with one overseas’ slot vacant in absence of Ben Stokes. Miller hit a fine fifty to stabilize RR’s innings in what proved to be a tricky chase. Miller is in good form and this is his chance to establish himself as one of the prominent foreign players in RR’s squad.

CSK Threats

CSK’s record against RR hasn’t been encouraging. Last season, the men in yellow lost both their league matches against RR. The first time CSK were made to chase and in the other, they batted first but could not defend a humble total. RR could borrow confidence from history and put CSK under some pressure.

CSK Opportunity

Deepak Chahar bowled a wonderful spell against Punjab Kings, displaying tight bowling in the powerplay overs. The pitch also fit his style of bowling as he finished with 4/13. M S Dhoni prefers Chahar’s bowls in the powerplays. If Chahar has another good day then he could be in the race for the Purple Cap.

Weaknesses for RR

RR’s spinners haven’t particularly impressed in the first two matches. Shreyas Gopal conceded 40 runs from his 3 overs in the first match before being overlooked for the second match. Rahul Tewatia has bowled only five overs and conceded 52 runs and is yet to pick a wicket. The onus is on the spinners to stop the flow of runs in the middle overs, something they haven’t done.

Strengths for RR

RR had a strange plan of playing three left-arm seamers — Mustafizur Rahman, Chetan Sakariya and Jaydev Unadkat — against DC. The plan was a surprise to many, but it did work as the three bowlers worked together to pick 5 wickets. Sakariya was impressive on his debut as he bagged 3 wickets. On a fast Mumbai pitch, RR seem to have discovered a potent fast bowling attack. The pacers could hunt plenty of more wickets in matches to come.

Weaknesses for CSK

Of the CSK’s top-4 batsmen, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali and Suresh Raina (the batting order), only Gaikwad has looked a bit wobbly. He is yet to reach a double-digit score this season, walking out on just five in the two matches. Against Punjab Kings, he mistimed most of his shots. His form would be a concern for the team.

Strengths for CSK

With four all-rounders — Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo -- CSK’s batting has more depth than in the previous season. In CSK’s team against Punjab Kings, nearly 10 players could bat. Not only does CSK have a great batting machine, the four all-rounders can be shuffled as required for optimal performance.
