Former umpire Rao no more

Former Test umpire from Karnataka SR Ramachandra Rao passed away here on Monday following a cardiac arrest. He was 81. 

Rao ma­de his first-class ump­iring de­b­ut in a Ranji Trophy ga­me betwe­en Uttar Pr­a­desh and Madhya Pradesh in Aligarh in November 1975 and went to officiate in 20 first-class games, including four matches that involved visiting teams.

His only Test was the match between India and Pakistan in Ahmedabad in March 1987. This was the game in which  Sunil Gavaskar became the first Test batsman to cross 10,000 runs.

Rao stood in five List A games, which included three ODIS.

His last game was the ODI between India and Pakistan in Pune (1987), which the visitors won by six wickets.
