Rumours of child lifting led to the death of a man in an accident at Murki village in Aurad taluk, Bidar district on Friday.

The deceased is Mohammad Ajam (28), a resident of Hyderabad.

According to the police, Mohammad Salman Alinoor, Mohammad Ajam, Noor Mohammad Sadiq and Salam Khubeshi had come to Handikera village in a car to meet their friend.

They were returning to Hyderabad when the incident occurred.

They stopped on the outskirts of Handikera and offered chocolates to a few children on the road. A few local residents presumed them to be child lifters and attacked them. Sensing the danger, they escaped in the car.

The villagers informed their acquaintances at Murki village about the incident. Before the car reached Murki, residents had mostly blocked the road waiting for the four.

Severe injuries

On noticing them, the car driver drove very fast, lost control over it and the car toppled into a roadside pit. Ajam died on the spot due to severe injuries, said the police.

The police rushed to the spot and safely sent the trio to Hyderabad and shifted the body to a hospital.

The police have arrested Amar Patil and Manoj Biradar for videographing the incident and making it viral on WhatsApp.

Though preliminary investigation revealed that the accident was the cause for death, the police are analysing pictures and videos to ascertain if it is a lynching case.
