Cabinet rejects Haveri firing inquiry report

Last Updated 17 March 2016, 20:14 IST

The State Cabinet on Thursday decided to reject the recommendations of the Kedambadi Jagannatha Shetty Commission of Inquiry, which probed into the police firing of June 2008 at Haveri wherein two persons were killed.

The then BJP government headed by B S Yeddyurappa had set up the panel after a farmers’ agitation against shortage of fertilisers led to violence in Haveri. The commission submitted its report to the government in 2010 and it had been referred to a sub-committee.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Law Minister T B Jayachandra said the Cabinet decided to reject the recommendations of the report as it stated that those killed in the firing were not farmers and it was not the farmers’ agitation that had led to the violence. Jayachandra said that the report stated that the violence was politically motivated.

“What the report states is contradictory to the discussions in the legislature. It was agreed during the discussion that those killed were farmers and compensation was paid to their families. There is no link between what happened and the contents of the report,” he said.

The JD(S) had also insisted that the then BJP government should reject the report. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, as soon as he took over the reins of power in the State, had stated that his government would revisit the commission report.

Tool room

The Cabinet gave its approval for establishing new Government Tool Room and Training Centre sub-centres at Chitradurga, Yadgir, Koppal, Udupi and Gokak at a cost of Rs 219 crore.

With no private players coming forward, the Cabinet decided that the propo-sed Karnataka Aerospace Technology Centre at Devanahalli will be executed by an agency of the State government at a cost of Rs 20.89 crore.
