Cong inevitable to form govt at Centre: Gowda

Last Updated 30 October 2018, 20:17 IST

Janata Dal (Secular) supremo H D Deve Gowda on Tuesday said that it is impossible for any alliance to form a government at the Centre without Congress.

At a press conference here, he said, “Congress president Rahul Gandhi is gaining experience. I can’t speak about his qualification. Without Rahul Gandhi, the question about who is qualified to become the prime minister is incomplete. He has my complete support.”

Gowda said the great alliance can be formed in two stages - once before the elections and later after the elections. Mayawati of BSP may be with JD(S) now. She may come with Congress in the coming days, he added. “In Uttar Pradesh, BSP and JD(S) may come together. If need be, I am ready to intervene,” he said.

Gowda called the byelections being held in five constituencies in the state as a test for the secular parties before the assembly elections in five states. The regional parties are going with Congress to keep BJP away from power, he said.

He said the secular parties will win the byelections. It is not a show of the strength of the coalition government, but the show of unity among the secular parties, he said.
