The Mysuru-based Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is on a mission to provide the popular ‘idly-sambar’ to astronauts soon.

According to officials of the DFRL, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has appealed to develop technology to provide idly-sambar as food for astronauts going on space missions in future.Deputy Director of DFRL A D Semwal said, “Astronauts are exposed to a different kind of environment in space. As the gravitational pull is lesser, compared to the surface of the Earth, all physiological activities are affected. So, they have to consume suitable food in limited doses. They also need suitable exercises to bear with the adverse environment. Thus, ISRO officials have written a letter to us to develop adequate technology to provide idly-sambar and other suitable food items.”
