Newly-inducted Animal Husbandry and Sericulture Minister A Manju, who has replaced Dr H C Mahadevappa as the district In-charge Minister, on Sunday accepted a challenge made by his political bete noire and JD(S) MLA H D Revanna to bring the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to Hassan.

Reacting to the statement made by Revanna, who had dared saying let the minister be successful in getting IIT to the district, Manju said, “I have taken it as a challenge.” He said he will meet Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and put all his efforts in this regard.

Speaking to media persons after participating in the Rajyotsava programme at the district stadium, he said steps will be taken to fill 30 per cent posts that have remained vacant in the Department of Animal Husbandry. However, there is no shortage of veterinarians in the district. The doctors, not willing to serve at rural areas, have created the situation. Steps should be taken to make it compulsory for the veterianarians to serve in villages, the minister added.

Commenting on the portfolio allotted to him, Manju said it is not important that which department is handed over to him, as he has willed to be the district-in-charge minister so that he can serve the people of the district.

The district is facing drought situation and relief works will be taken up on priority basis. Compensation should be provided to the family of the deceased farmers, he said.

Manju said he will concentrate on expediting the irrigation projects, control sand mafia, provide compensation to potato growers and implement multivillage drinking water and other programmes.

The minister said he has a lot of tasks on hand, including road repair, check the increasing wild jumbo menace and finding a permanent solution to the existing problems.
