Except Mysuru, which bagged fifth position, none of the cities in Karnataka were able to find a place in the top 50 cleanest urban areas in the country in cleanliness survey released here on Thursday.
According to Swachh Survekshan-2017 released by Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, of the 27 cities and towns covered in Karnataka, two towns Gangavati (381st rank) and Badami (388th rank) emerged as dirtiest with low ranking.
Places such as Vijayapura, Bidar, Hosapete, Raichur, Chitradurga, Robertsonpet (KGF) and Kolar have ranked beyond 300 in the all India level survey.
This means, these cities or towns have to take drastic steps to improve cleanliness by developing infrastructure including building public as well as individual household toilets, collection of house-to-house garbage, putting up garbage collections bins in commercial areas and effective solid waste management, Naidu said.
On Mysuru slipping to fifth position this time from first position in the last two surveys, the minister said, “Surveys this year and last year were conducted on the basis of total marks of 2,000 for various sanitation-related components. In both the surveys, Mysuru scored over 87%. This shows that there is no decline in sanitation levels from the last year and it is that four new cities —Indore, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam and Surat have scored better rank than Mysuru”.
