Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project has plans to expand green cover in the district by planting saplings of various species of trees.

Participating in the Vanamahotsava organised at Veer Savarkar Park at Uppalli here, the project’s district unit director Geetha said it has been planned to plant 5,000 saplings including jamun, rosewood, neem and mango at 55 villages in the district. The local self-help groups will be tasked with nurturing the plants, she added.

Saplings distributed
To encourage afforestation alone, two lakh saplings of different species have been distributed across the state. That apart, 29 lakh processed seed balls have been distributed, she said.

Geetha said that it is essential to conserve the forest cover for next generation.

Taluk programme officer K Baby, president of Vivekananda Youth Association Raju and others were present.
