Adventurous treat awaits sports buffs

Terrestrial, aqua and aero sports to be held from October 10-14

Addressing media in the city on Thursday, working president of Dasara Adventure Sports Sub-committee S J Mariba Shetty, who is also the commandant of Mounted Police wing, said they are conducting several events from October 10 to 14. The events have been divided into three categories; terrestrial, aqua and aero sports.

Terrestrial

It includes tyrolene traverse (in case of water it is called river crossing), jhummering, horse riding, climbing steps to Chamundi Hills, rock climbing and rappelling at the foot of Chamundi Hills, artificial wall climbing at Chamundi Vihar Grounds, zorbing, paint ball at Oval Grounds, and others. The speciality here is, horse lovers can go for a trot walk on horseback up to Nandi statue. To make it further interesting, a ‘jilebi’ and banana biting contest will also be conducted. The participants have to bite the eatables tied at a height, craning from the saddle. It will be held in different categories on October 10 at 6.30 am. The winners will be feted with prizes. Interested can register their names at the office of KSRP mounted company, Lalithmahal road in the city. While organisers will train those interested in artificial wall climbing from October 9 to 11, state-level competition in the same sports will be held on October 12 and 13. Chamundi Hills climbing contest is scheduled on October 13 at 6.30 am. Entry is free for all the events.

Aqua

Shetty said, varuna lake on T Narsipur road has been selected for aqua sports this year. The Department of irrigation has increased the water level at the lake to an extent for the purpose. Barring wind surfing and water skiing that will be performed by the experts, the remaining events will be open for all. They are; jet skiing offered at Rs 200, banana ride (Rs 100), kayaking and coracle ride at Rs 30 each for 15 minutes. The lake proves to be an ideal location with adequate facilities for vehicle parking too, he added.

Aero

On aero sports, Shetty said they are pursuing the matter with the authorities concerned to host hot air balloon ride. For five days, it requires 125 gas cylinders to keep the balloon in motion. It can accommodate nine (8+1). A clear picture is expected to emerge in a day or two. All the events will be held from 9 am to 12.30 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm.
Leaving no stone unturned on safety aspects, the organisers have tied up with General Thimmaiah National Academy, Bangalore who are also conducting a few events, said assistant director of the academy Jithendra Shetty.

Chairman of the sub-committee, K J Ramesh, member secretary, Indiramma, members Pulikeshi Y Shettappanavar and Rukmini Chandra were present.
