Aila impact: No rain in Kodagu

District received 298.27 mm rain between January and May

As experts opined, monsoon has been delayed in Madikeri too due to the impact of Cyclone ‘Aila’ in Bay of Bengal.

The district had received 298.27 mm rain during the period between Januay and May in 2008. However, this year the rain received during the period was only 244.34 mm. The difference can also be noticed in the taluk-wise rain statistics. While Madikeri taluk has received average rain, a steep decrease can be seen in the statistics of Somawarpet taluk.

While Madikeri taluk had recorded 381.50 mm rain during the period between January and May in 2008, the rain received during the corresponding period in 2009 is 347 mm. But the rainfall in 2007 for the same period was only 177.39 mm.  While there was 236.40 mm rain in Somwarpet taluk from January to May in 2008, it has been come down to 132.04 mm in 2009. Whereas, in 2007 it was only 111.14 mm.

Though the district had received enough rains in April, the quantity of rain has been decreased drastically in May. While Koorg’s average rainfall from January to April was 98.80 mm, district had received 161.97 mm rain this year, recording 163.94 percent growth.

In Madikeri taluk, the rainfall till April this year was 237.88 mm against the taluk’s average rainfll of 104.10 mm. Similarly, in Somwarpet taluk, the rainfll from January to April this year was 75.63 against the average of 92 mm. In Virajpet taluk the rainfall till April this year was 172.39 mm against the average of 100.30 mm.

The statistics shows that rain fall till the end of April was higher than the average in the district except in Somwarpet taluk, where the rainfall was below the average.
