A distinctive Hoysala style monument was discovered during the excavation conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India, at Bastihalli, the popular Jain pilgrim site in Halebid, Hassan district.

The excavation work is being conducted since the last 10 days. In an effort not to damage the sculptures dating back to centuries, the department is using only small equipment for digging the site.

A distinctive foundation with Jain sculptures was discovered at the site. The excavations are photographed, documented and later taken out of the soil. Experts are regularly visiting the site of excavation.

A 18-ft tall Thirthankara's statue was discovered at the site, around 40 years ago, which has been conserved at the museum in Halebid. The place, where the statue was discovered is referred as Shravanappana gundi, by the locals.

Historian Vasanth Kumar said, "If the place is excavated fully, there are possibilities of finding five to seven Jain temples. It is also said that there was a Jain Mutt on the premises. Hence, the place should be totally excavated."
