In the meantime, Zilla Panchayat CEO A B Ibrahim had written a letter to the State government on August 19, urging the government to release Rs 12.96 crore for the drinking water project.

The recently held ZP meeting had decided to take a delegation to the Chief Minister demanding the release of Rs 12.96 crore. The CM had orally agreed to release the amount when a delegation from the district had met him few months ago. However, no funds have been released so far.

In 2010-11, the district was expecting a sum of Rs 13.80 crore for the drinking water projects. Of which, Rs 894.87 crore was sanctioned to the district. A sum of Rs 6.04 crore has been released now. An action plan has already been prepared for the released amount. The estimate will be prepared by the month end and tender process will commence, said ZP Engineering division Executive Engineer Keshavamurthy.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, he said the plan includes supplying water through pipeline, rejuvenating the defunct borewells and minor irrigation.
It is said that the CM has released additional funds for undertaking drinking water projects in Shimoga. A delegation of MLAs and ZP members will meet CM, to release additional funds to Kodagu.

The district may not face shortage of drinking water for the next three to four months in the back drop of heavy rains lashing the district. However, the water crisis reaches its peak during summer.
