Kodagu RTO earns ` 20.5 cr revenue

The Kodagu district RTO has earned a revenue of Rs 20.50 crore during 2010-11. The target was to raise Rs 17.50 crore. However, the RTO surpassed the target and achieved 118 per cent success in the revenue collection. The target for 2011-12 is Rs 21 crore.

In 2009-10, the target was to collet Rs 15.83 crore, and the RTO had collected Rs 15.72 crore, thus achieving 99 per cent success in revenue collection.

The population of Kodagu is 5.50 lakh and as many as 89,130 vehicles have been registered in the district till March. As many as 6,243 vehicles have been registered last year alone. Of which, the registration of cars and two-wheelers is more. In 2009-10, as many as 5,436 vehicles were registered. Of which, 2,846 are motor cycles, 1,538 are cars, 32 are autorickshaws, 56 mobile cabs, 205 omni bus, 36 maxi babs. seven buses, 395 transport vehicles and 381 other vehicles.

Similarly, in 2010-11, as many as 2507 two-wheelers, 1959 cars, 449 autorickshaws, 113 mobile cabs, 219 omni bus, 34 maxi cabs, 4 buses, 531 transport vehicles, 427 other vehicles. A total of 6,243 vehicles have been registered.

By March end, a total of 38,955 two-wheelers, 20,164 cars, 5,387 autorickshaws, 627 mobile cabs, 3,429 mini buses, 362 maxi cabs, 213 buses, 3,658 transport vehicles and 16,290 other vehicles have been registered in the district.

Shortage of staff

The sanctioned posts to Kodagu RTO is 36. Of which, 6 posts are lying vacant. Vehicle inspectors posts are also lying vacant.

The total sanctioned post is 4. Of which, the district has only one inspector. The shortage of staff is delaying the work like issue of licenses, vehicle inspection, accident vehicle inspection, etc.

Smart cards

The Transport department is issuing smart cards which includes driving license and RC since November 2009. A total of 23,375 driving licenses and 5,828 RCs have been distributed through smart cards, said RTO M Habibulla Khan.

As many as 658 cases have been registered in the district for violating Motor Vehicle Act last year. As many as 199 vehicles have been seized. A sum of Rs 48.20 lakh has been collected as fine from the offenders.

Help desk

To avoid middlemen and to help public, a help desk has been started at RTO office. A PRO too has been appointed.
