Rains throw life out of gear in Kodagu, Chikmagalur

Many areas witness landslides, water-level in rivers go up; holday for schools, colleges today

The rain miseries have continued in Kodagu and Chikmagalur districts. A person lost his life after drowning in the flood water in Chikmagalur on Thursday.

The incessant rains did not recede in Kodagu, though it receded to some extent in Chikmagalur district. Landslide in several areas in Madikeri has damaged the houses, throwing people in difficulty. A house in which Mohiuddin and Zubaida couple where residing in Madikeri city, collapsed due to landslide on Thursday morning.

The injured couple have been admitted to the hospital. Landslide was reported in Ranipet and Mangaladevi Nagara too.

The landslide occurred on Madikeri-Mangalore state highway near Madenadu blocked the movement of vehicles for a long time.

The district received 124.96 mm rain in the last 24 hours. Madikeri taluk received the highest rainfall of 164.4 mm, followed by Virajpet taluk - 105.08 mm and Somwarpet taluk - 105.4 mm.

The water level in Harangi reservoir has touched 2857.52 ft as against the maximum water level of 2,859 mm. Harangi and surrounding areas received 66.2 mm rain in the last 24 hours. The inflow of water to the reservoir is 9740 cusecs. 6200 cusecs of water has been released from reservoir for safety purpose.

Holiday to schools

Deputy Commissioner Dr N V Prasad has declared holiday to schools and colleges in Kodagu district in the wake of heavy rainfall.

However, the supplementary exams for II PUC will be held as per the time table. He has asked the families residing in low-lying areas to move to safer places.

Areas like Korangala, Ayyangeri, Perur are surrounded by water. Road transportation to several villages has been halted due to the flood. As the Cheriyaparambu area on the banks of Cauvery river is facing the flood threat, the DC has instructed them to shift to safer places.

In Chikmagalur

Zulfikar, a resident of Bannur in Chikmagalur district drowned on Thursday. He was riding the bike when the incident occurred.

His shoes and bike were found near the spot where he drowned. However, his body is yet to be traced.

As the rains receded in Malnad region, transportation has resumed in the district on Thursday. Though the flood water entered till Yatri Nivas in Sringeri, it has not affected the devotees.

Shopkeepers in the temple town have been directed to vacate the shops. Teams have been formed in the taluk centres comprising of officers from the Public Work Department (PWD), Forest and Mescom which are carrying out joint operations. Control rooms have been opened in the taluk centres, said Deputy Commissioner V Yashwanth.
