A black Monday in Kodagu

Monday turned out to be a black day in Kodagu with seven deaths reported from various parts of the district.

Three labourers died of electrocution at Arvathoklu in Virajpet taluk, while a girl died after falling into a lake at Seventh Hosakote.

A couple committed suicide at Pampinakere in Madikeri and a woman was murdered for her ornaments at Kelagna Mekeri.

Couple suicide

A couple committed suicide at a rented house near Pampinakere in Madikeri on Monday noon. The deceased are Chethan (34) and Vani (28), natives of Tiptur in Tumakuru.

Chethan was serving as a teacher at Rajeshwari School while Vani was a housewife. Chethan had gone for work in the morning and returned home after applying for leave at around 11.30 am. However, Vani had committed suicide by the time he reached home. Later, Chethan called the police and informed them of committing suicide by hanging. By the time the police reached the house, Chethan too had ended his life.

The couple is survived by a three-year-old child. The reason for the suicide is not known. A case has been registered at Town Police Station.

3 electrocuted

Three labourers were electrocuted after an aluminium ladder came in contact with a live wire while they were plucking coconuts, at Arvathoklu in Virajpet taluk, on Monday.

According to the police, the deceased are Igguda Sathish (50) of Kavadi, Igguda Ravi (45) and Mottera Dharmaja (50).

The trio was plucking coconuts from the coconut plantation of Ramajanma when the ladder fell on an 11 kv line that passes through the plantation. It is suspected that the incident must have happened when they were climbing the ladder.

Murder

In another tragedy, miscreants have murdered a woman and decamped with ornaments, at Kelagina Mekeri in Madikeri. The deceased is Usha (48).

Drowning

A 13-year-old girl accidentally fell into a lake while playing with a dog and died, at Seventh Hosakote.

The deceased is Bharathi, daughter of Choma, a plantation worker.

The incident occurred when she was playing with her pet dog. A case has been registered at Suntikoppa Police Station.
