Monsoon continues to batter places across Karnataka

The currently active monsoon continued to lash districts in Karnataka on Friday morning. Thunderstorms that crippled life and work in the cities, were reported in both the northern and southern parts of the state.

Mangaluru

Owing to copious rains this morning in Dakshina Kannada district, the Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil declared holidays for schools in the district on Friday and Saturday.

Vijayapura

The rain of the 'Mrigashira' (Miraga) star began in Vijayapura in the wee hours of Friday morning bringing joy to the farmers of the district. The people of the district believe that the monsoon makes an official entry into to the district on June 7 (June Saath). Friday's heavy rains have proved the 'Miraga' belief to be true.

Karwar

Inclusive of Karwar city, a number of places in the Uttara Kannada district, have received heavy rains. The district remained largely cloudy on Thursday evening and witnessed light rain. But school children faced hardship due to Friday's downpour.

Udupi

The rains which began on Thursday night has been pouring all night and on Friday morning. Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis had declared a holiday for schools on Friday as a precautionary measure. The met department has forecast that the district will receive heavy rains till June 10.

Raichur

As expected, the monsoon hit Raichur district on Friday bringing with it, cheer to the farming community. Rains that began with a drizzle at 10.30 am, continued into the afternoon, though there was no thunder, lightning or high wind speeds.

As most farmers had sown their crop in anticipation of this June Saath (June 7) rain, they are relieved that the rain gods kept their promise this season. Lingasugur, Manvi and Sindhanur are three taluks which have received rains.
