The erstwhile NCP-Congress coalition model of Maharashtra for sharing power is one of the options before Congress high command to follow in Karnataka.

In Maharastra, the Congress party during its alliance with the NCP had given up the chief minister’s post to keep key posts such as deputy chief minister, home, PWD, energy and excise.

According to KPCC president G Parameshwara, the Congress leaders are exploring this similar model of power distribution with the JD(S) leaders.

Speaking to DH, Parameshwara said, “There is a discussion at the high command level to follow the Maharashtra model. Leaders of both the parties will also discuss implementation of common programmes. The Congress will get the Speaker’s post for giving up the chief minister’s post to the JD(S).”

The Congress has 78 MLAs, while the JD (S) has 37. The number of ministerial berths will be based on the ratio of the seats won by each party.

“However, there is no final decision in this regard. The party high command will take a suitable decision in consultation with leaders from both parties,” he added.

When asked about the demand for giving a deputy chief minister post for a leader from north Karnataka, he said, “There is a demand to make me the deputy chief minister. It is quite natural. The high command will take a call on this.”

He also said that he would resign as the KPCC president soon after he joins the Cabinet.

Parameshwara has held the post for over seven years.
