NRIs spend fortune to come, vote in India

At a time when voter apathy is high among voters in India, more so, in the ‘me generation’ who prefer to go on a picnic or laze around in their homes on the polling day, here are the non-resident Indians, driven by a sense of civic consciousness, returned to their roots, spending lakhs, just to take part in the democratic process.

Vijaykumar C Airani, a software engineer at California, USA for the last 14 years, has taken leave from work to exercise his Constitutional duty at his native. He cast his vote at Kokkaragolla booth in Davangere taluk on Tuesday.
Vijaykumar told DH, “This election holds high stakes and crucial in shaping the future of the country. Every vote is important in electing the competent person/party. I have discharged my duty by exercising my franchise.”

Vijayalakshmi Honnappagoudar, who is working as a software engineer in Ontario city, Canada, spent over Rs one lakh to visit her native Thotaganti near Naregal, Gadag district, to take part in the democratic process.

“Eight of my friends working in different countries too have flown to their natives to take part in the festival of democracy,” Vijaylakshmi told DH.
Niharik Sasihittal, a native of Dharwad, who works as an engineer in the United States, along with his wife Preksha and mother Mangala, came to his native to cast his vote. Niharik and Mangala exercised their franchise at the Govt Model
Primary School at Saraswatpur in Dharwad. The family will travel to Mumbai to facilitate Preksha to vote before flying to the US.

Similarly, Vinith and Soumya Gokhale couple, who are working as scientists in the Czech Republic, returned home to exercise their duty. While Soumya cast her vote at a booth at Raitha Bhavan in Sirsi, Vinith exercised his franchise in Harihar.

Kiran Upadhyaya, a Bahrain-based businessman, and his son Siddharth Upadhyaya exercised their franchise at Gowdalli booth in Sirsi under Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha constituency.

Padmanabh Kanchi of Hubballi, who is pursuing his Master of Technology (Mechanical Engineering) in Italy, flew in to cast his vote.

Amaresh Vatagal, an engineer in Oman, discharged his Constitutional duty at his native Vatagal under Raichur parliamentary constituency.
