Railway subways to come alive with Karnataka's culture

Soon, the subways of major railway stations coming under South Western Railways (SWR), Mysuru Division, will come alive with impressive paintings depicting Karnataka’s art, culture and tradition.

Railway authorities have decided to beautify the subways after the paintings on the walls of the subway at Mysuru station attracted passengers. The subway that connects platform No 1 and 6, has vibrant paintings depicting art, architecture, culture and tradition of the people of Karnataka. The architectural masterpieces of well-known places such as Belur, Halebeedu, Aihole, Badami among the others built during the periods of Hoysalas and Chalukyas have come alive on these walls.

The major railway stations under Mysuru division such as Shivamogga Town, Davangere, Hassan, Subramanya Road and Nanjangud will be beautified on the lines of Mysuru Railway station. The works will be taken up in a phased manner, according to South Western Railway, Mysuru Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Aparna Garg.

The theme-based wall painting that glorifies the arts and monuments of Karnataka allured most tourists during Dasara. The walls were beautified a few days before the commencement of Dasara.

Besides, the tourists could also have a glimpse of the famous Karaga festival of Bengaluru, Veeragase Dance, Dollu Kunitha, Yakshagana, Bharatanatyam and other popular folk dances in art form. The paintings of mythological characters Mahisasura and Nandi can also be seen.

The DRM said, Mysuru Railway station is the driving force behind the initiative. Beautification has been taken up in a systematic manner with a theme to improve the aesthetics and make the surroundings pleasant, she said.
