With Cyclone Titli intensifying in the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea on West Coast turned unusually rough on Wednesday.

Huge waves were seen lashing Peribail in Someshwara Ucchila. Forty-four houses face a threat of being washed away by the huge waves in the area.

The seawater has already inundated three houses at Kiliriyanagara, Kaiko, Subhash Nagar, Mukkacchery and Peribail in Someshwara Ucchila.

With sea turning rough, the road connecting Someshwara at Peribail in Ucchila remained waterlogged for the most part of the day. The stormwater drains were covered with sand. The roads were covered with garbage and other solid waste washed ashore in Peribail. Water entered five houses in Peribail. With saltwater entering wells, residents faced a shortage of drinking water.

Someshwara Gram Panchayat president Rajesh Ucchil, who rushed to the spot, promised to supply water to the residents through tankers and clear the drains using earth movers.

Ullal CMC Commissioner Vani Alva said 41 houses in Ullal face threat from the violent waves. Precautionary measures have been taken to check any untoward incident, Alva said.

At Maravanthe, alert fishermen prevented 20 traditional boats from being washed away due to high tide. “We were forced to anchor boats on the road due to the shortage of space,” a fisherman said.
