JOIN US'State will not get IIT'
Delivering a talk after inaugurating the Sri Krishna School of Engineering and Management at Sarjapur Cross Road on Wednesday, the minister said that the State already had Central Universities apart from prestigious institutions like the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Management.
“It will not be possible to provide the State an IIT during the Eleventh Five Year Plan,” she said, adding that IITs have been sanctioned for a few other States.
It may be recalled that Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa had repeatedly been demanding an IIT for the State and had even written to the HRD Ministry in this connection recently.
Purandeswari also said that the proposal to set up the National Commission for Higher Education and Research (NCHER) was pending approval from the Prime Minister.
The Commission would be an umbrella organisation and regulatory bodies like the AICTE and the UGC will come under its fold.
The Minister refused to answer any questions on the bitter succession war taking place in Andhra Pradesh in the aftermath of the death of Chief Minister Y Rajashekhar Reddy. She also unveiled a statue of her late father and former Andhra Pradesh CM N T Rama Rao.
