Schools 1 km apart with low enrolment to merge

Primary and Secondary Education Minister N Mahesh said on Sunday that only government and government-aided schools within a radius of 1 km from each other and have low admission enrolment would be merged.

He was speaking to media persons here. The minister said, “There are plans to start LKG and UKG in 4,100 government schools on a pilot basis to attract parents.” Mahesh said a discussion in this regard would be held with education experts. The minister said steps will be taken to introduce the English as a language from Class 1 in government schools. A decision has been taken to recruit 10,000 teachers. “We will improve the quality of education and skills among high school students,” he said.

On free bus pass to students, the minister said a decision in this regard would be taken after holding one more round of discussions with the chief minister and the transport minister. The minister said steps would be taken to improve the SSLC examination results in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region. Mahesh said the office of the additional commissioner of the education department in Kalaburagi would be converted into a full-fledged commissioner’s office.
