The street vendors continue to carry out business on the roadsides despite earmarking space for street vendors’ yard. Therefore, strict action will be initiated to vacate them, said Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner Mohammed Nazir.

Speaking during the 100th edition of the phone-in programme, conducted by the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate, here on Friday, he said that an acre of land, near Nehru maidan, had been earmarked for street vendors to carry out their business.

“MCC has issued identity cards to 400 street vendors and provided other facilities. It has also persuaded them to shift to the new market space. But they have not agreed. Now, the legal action is inevitable,” he added.

Speaking on the illegal commercial usage of parking space in buildings, Nazir said that action was being initiated against such buildings as per the MUDA zonal regulations.

The Commissioner of police meanwhile suggested the MCC commissioner to increase the height of footpath as per standards.

In several places, the footpath and the roads are on the same level. This makes the vehicle riders easily park their vehicles on the pedestrian path.

Canara Bus Owners Association president Rajavarma Ballal said that the association had deployed 80 people as checking inspectors to ensure the issue of tickets in service buses on Mangaluru-Karkala route.

Dakshina Kannada District Bus Owners Association President Dilraj Alva said that WhatsApp number had been displayed in all city buses and the bus commuters can send their complaints to the Association.

Mapping of city buses is done through GPRS monitoring system. Out of 65 routes, the mapping of 35 routes have been completed.
