The CAA was enacted in December 2019 for granting Indian nationality to persecuted Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.

Supreme Court directed the proceedings for petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA) for April 9, 2024. A total of 237 petitions had been filed in this regard. In today's hearing, arguing for the petitioner, Kapil Sibal said that notification was issued after 4 years of the Act, when under the law, notification should be issued within 6 months. Another counsel, Indira Jaising and Sibal demanded that there should be no granting of citizenship till the next proceeding and if something like this happens, they should be given the liberty to move to the court.
