Now teenagers can open Instagram accounts with strict parental control features in India

Meta has reduced the age limit for users to open an Instagram account in India.

Previously, people aged 16 and above were allowed to open accounts on Instagram. Now, with the consent of the parents youngsters aged 13 can open an Instagram account.

To protect children from predators, Instagram has fortified the accounts with high-security features.

By default, teen accounts are set to private, meaning they must approve new followers, and non-followers cannot view or interact with their content.

Also, teens will have the strictest messaging settings enabled. It will receive messages only from people they follow or are already connected with.

To protect the children from age-inappropriate content, teen accounts are automatically placed in the most restrictive setting, limiting their exposure to sensitive content, such as depictions of physical fights or promotions of cosmetic procedures, in areas like Explore and Reels.

Also, only those teens who follow can tag the latter on Instagram. Further, their accounts are protected with the strictest version of the anti-bullying feature.

Also, the Hidden Words feature will be enabled by default to filter out offensive language in comments and DM requests.

Another important feature of teens' accounts on Instagram is the time limit reminders. Children will receive notifications prompting them to exit the app after 60 minutes of daily usage.

And, it also comes with Sleep Mode. It will be activated from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM. It will mute notifications and automatically send pre-set replies of non-availability to interact with DMs at night time.

For parents, Teen Accounts will provide supervision tools that allow them to monitor and manage their child's experience, including approving changes to safety settings and setting daily screen-time limits.

Once the time limit set by parents is reached, the teen will no longer be able to access Instagram. Also, guardians can restrict Instagram access at night or during designated times with a simple toggle.

Most importantly, parents can see a list of people their teen has messaged in the past seven days (without reading the message content).

Meta has revealed that it has introduced new security features to verify the age of the users to set up Instagram accounts in India.
