Udupi Deputy Commisisoner Priyanka Mary Francis and Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commisisoner Sasikanth Senthil carried out an inspection of the land identified for the construction of port at Hejamady. The centre has released Rs 138.60 crore for the project.

After inspecting the site and holding discussions with fishermen leaders and officials of the Fisheries Department, Priyanka Mary Francis said that the work on breakwater would be taken up first and directed the revenue inspector to identify the land for the purpose.

“The construction of Hejamady port will reduce the pressure on ports at Malpe and Mangaluru.”

DC Sasikanth Senthil said that fishermen from Dakshina Kannada had raised objection to the construction of breakwater at Hejamady, as it would result in coastal erosion at Sasihithlu. The experts should chalk out a solution taking into consideration the coastal erosion while constructing the breakwater project, he added.

50 years

Mulki Purse Seine and Trawl Boat Fishermen Association General Secretary Vijaya S Bangera said, “We have been fighting for the construction of port at Hejamady for the past 50 years.”
