ULB polls: Setback for BJP in its strong forte

Last Updated 31 October 2018, 21:03 IST

The BJP has lost its stronghold over Kushalnagar, Somwarpet and Virajpet Town Panchayats. The Congress-JD(S) coalition has gained an upper hand in the election.

The BJP has failed to come to power in two urban local bodies (ULBs) independently and needs the support of independent candidates to come to power in Virajpet. With this, the BJP has received a set back in the district.

In Somwarpet town panchayat, out of 11 wards, Congress has won 4, JD(S) 3, BJP 3 and Independent 1. As the Congress and JD(S) had entered into a pre-poll alliance, the coalition will come to power.

In spite of Congress-JD(S) coalition in Virajpet Town Panchayat, the election has ended with a hung house. The BJP has won 8 seats while JD(S) 1, Congress 6 and Independents 3. The BJP can come to power only with the help of the independent candidates.

In Kushalnagar, Congress has won 6 seats, BJP 6 and JD(S) has won 4. Though the JD(S) and Congress had not entered into a pre-poll alliance, after the results, they have decided for an alliance.

Though BJP has won majority seats in Virajpet, it cannot come to power on its own.

In Somwarpet, after 22 years, the BJP has lost power. Though BJP MLA M P Appacchu Ranjan had a hold over Somwarpet region, the Congress-JDS coalition has been able to win the election.

Though MLA M P Appacchu Ranjan and MP Prathap Simha have voted during the election to Kushalnagar president and vice president’s posts, the BJP will get only eight votes. As a result, the coalition between Congress-JDS is almost confirmed.

Virajpet has been a BJP’s strong forte. However, the coalition of the Congress- and JD(S) has spoiled the calculations of the BJP leaders to come to power.

As MLA K G Bopaiah and MP Prathap Simha have votes for the selection of the president and vice president, the BJP is likely to come to power in Virajpet.

M K Dechamma, who contested as a rebel candidate when she failed to get a ticket from BJP to contest from the seventh ward, has won the election.

The BJP is trying to seek her and two other independent candidates’ support to come to power in Virajpet.
