Barack, Michelle Obama headed for a divorce? Here is all you need to know

It was Michelle Obama's birthday on January 17, and former US President Barack Obama's post on social media wishing his wife unexpectedly fanned the couple's divorce rumors on the internet.

Barack Obama's X post for the former first lady garnered mixed reactions online.

"Happy birthday to the love of my life, @MichelleObama. You fill every room with warmth, wisdom, humor, and grace – and you look good doing it. I’m so lucky to be able to take on life’s adventures with you. Love you!" the post read as the former president shared a picture of the couple sitting across each other reaching out to hold hands.

The post sparked numerous reactions online with some showering the couple with love and others concluding that the duo is surely heading towards a divorce.

"I wish you all the best.. but to post a photo where you two are so far apart and kind of fake smiling, might indicate that the divorce rumors are true.. does anyone agree?" wrote one user while another said, "This is the coldest, least romantic photo I've ever seen online!"

Defending the couple, a social media user commented: "Wonderful couple. Jealous people posting negative comments. Unfortunately, the achievements these two have made in society both as individuals and as a family can not be met by any of you."

The couple's divorce rumours sparked recently when it was revealed that only Barack Obama would be attending Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony.

A statement from her office did not specify a reason for the scheduled absence but noted that she had not attended another event this month: she did not accompany her husband to the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter, which every other living former president and first lady attended.

Even though netizens were too quick to jump at the divorce rumours after this announcement, as per media reports the reason behind her absence is that Michelle "doesn’t want to fake a smile."
