Southwest monsoon will hit Bengaluru in three days: IMD

Gear up for an early rainy season as the India Meteorological Department forecasts the southwest monsoon to hit the city in the next two to three days.

“The conditions seem favourable for the southwest monsoon to hit the coast of Kerala in another 48 hours. After which, it will take another day to reach Karnataka and Bengaluru,” said an IMD official, who did not wish to be named.

The northern limit of the monsoon has passed the Nicobar area and conditions are right for its further advancement. The normal date for the monsoon’s arrival in India is June 1, with a margin of plus or minus five days.

The IMD, on its website on Friday, said conditions are favourable for the advancement of monsoon in parts of south Arabian Sea, Comorin, the Maldives, parts of the Andaman Sea, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshwadeep, south Kerala, south Tamil Nadu and parts of the south and the east-central Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours.

Sunder M Metri, director in-charge, IMD Bengaluru, said the city and other parts of Karnataka were presently experiencing pre-monsoon showers. The thundershowers are because of the formation of various pressure systems.

The IMD has issued a warning of thundershowers and gusty winds for the next three days over the south and north interior Karnataka.
